The CDC recently released the National Diabetes Statistics Report for 2022. Per the CDC’s report, there are currently 37.3 million people (11.3% of US population) with diabetes. Of that population, 28.7 million are diagnosed and 8.5 are undiagnosed. Figure below shows the prevalence (number of people who have the disease) of diabetes. As shown, it has increased between 2004 to 2019.

Data sources: US Diabetes Surveillance System; Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.
In 2019, it was estimated that 1.4 million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed. In 2015 the prevalence was higher (about 1.5 million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed). This likely means there has been diabetes risk that has been prevented or delayed for people in the US. Figure below shows the incidence has decreased over the years.

Is this a hopeful sign that we are finally making progress? In short, yes. The U.S. is working hard to drop its diabetes incidence rate. Diabetes Education is helping to lower these numbers.
To continue to drop the incidence rate, below are a few ways to lower the risk of diabetes:
